In early February, twelve LCMS missionary women gathered in Cambodia for the first Asia regional retreat in a decade. Led by Deaconess Heidi Goehmann, a licensed social worker and therapist, who serves alongside her pastor husband at St. John’s Lutheran Church, the three-day retreat focused on the transitions of life reflected in Ecclesiastes 3. Through Bible study, prayer, personal reflection, and interactive exercises, the women considered the hope that remains present in every season. Attendees traveled from the U.S., Sri Lanka, Taiwan, South Korea, and locally to participate in the long-awaited gathering.
Over shared meals and conversation, the group quickly formed meaningful connections. An afternoon “bean-to-bar” chocolate-making experience entertained and informed the group about local agriculture and products, while also providing time for laughter and conversation.

For many of the women, the retreat offered a rare opportunity to step away from daily ministry responsibilities and reconnect with others who understand the unique life of overseas service. Conversations extended beyond the scheduled sessions as participants shared stories of their lives and the joys and challenges of missionary work.
Mindy Thews, LCMS missionary who serves in Taiwan, reflected, “The retreat was a wonderful time of refreshment with my sisters in Christ. We were blessed to gather for Bible study and fellowship.”
Special thanks are extended to Aimee Cima, Regional Care Coordinator – Asia, for organizing this edifying time for women serving throughout the Asia region.
