Missionaries of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) serving in the Asia region gathered this summer in Wittenberg for a few days of learning, growing, and experiencing the rich culture of our Lutheran heritage.  

Professor Carl Beckwith of Concordia Theological Seminary Ft. Wayne organized several lecture sessions which connected Martin Luther’s writings, thoughts, and sermons to the work of mission. He also led the missionary families on walking tours to the historic sites of this treasured city, including St. Mary’s church (where Luther often preached) and the Castle Church (where Luther posted the 95 Theses).  

A valuable excursion took the group to Wartburg Castle, where Luther was hidden away by Frederick the Wise to escape those who threatened his life. Participants were able to peer into the very room where Luther translated the Bible into German.  

Gathering in a large hall towards the end of the tour, the missionary families joined in singing “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” On Friday, the Rev. Dr. Brian Gauthier, Managing Director for the Office of International Mission, shared God’s Word during the Divine Service held inside St. Mary’s, with the Rev. Dr. Tom Park, Coordinator of Theological Education for the OIM Asia Region, presiding.  

In addition to the Bible studies, lectures, and corporate worship, the families were able to recognize milestones for colleagues who had completed specified number of years of service. A special video was also shown to commemorate and give thanks to God for the 60 years of service completed by Dcs. Carol Halter who first arrived in Hong Kong in 1966. 

Ms. Aimee Cima, Coordinator for Care and Development of the OIM Asia Region and main planner of the event, remarked, “These opportunities to gather as a region are critical for the care and encouragement of our missionaries. Formal sessions provide learning and growth, while informal time spent together builds solidarity and camaraderie.”
