Project: CU0001-65056
Few people are aware of the history and influence of Lutheranism in Colombia. It dates back to the time of the Spanish Inquisition. In fact, four Roman Catholic priests became Lutheran martyrs on May 30, 1688, when they were burned at the stake in Cartagena, Colombia, for refusing to recant their Lutheran confession of faith. Despite such opposition, the influence of Lutheran teachings and practice has been present in varying forms and to varying degrees throughout Colombia’s history.
While the LCMS has not historically had mission work in Colombia, recent requests to support a confessional Lutheran Church there have led the LCMS to consider and explore mission work in this country. These requests have come from LCMS members, as well as Colombian pastors and laity. This exploration has led to numerous visits, conversations, and plans for future mission work in Colombia.
Currently, the LCMS provides literature and theological education for Lutheran clergy and laity who have left other Lutheran church bodies due to liberal teachings and practices. One pastor has successfully completed the colloquy process. Future plans involve establishing a FORO and the possibility of receiving men to study as seminarians and women to study to become deaconesses at Concordia the Reformer Seminary in the Dominican Republic. In addition, the LCMS is actively seeking opportunities to plant new Lutheran churches in Colombia. We thank God for such opportunities, as the mission field of Colombia truly is ripe for harvest!
