Dominican Republic Country Summary

The Dominican Republic Lutheran Mission (DR Mission) began when the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod entered into a partnership in 2004 with Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services, Inc., and the Central American Lutheran Mission Society (CALMS).

The DR Mission has since planted five Lutheran churches, four preaching stations, two schools, and a group home for people with developmental disabilities. In addition, the mission has established Concordia the Reformer Seminary to form pastors and deaconesses. The seminary was opened in 2017 in Palmar Arriba, Santiago, and serves Spanish speakers in Latin America, South America and the Caribbean.

An emphasis on mercy work in the Dominican Republic is evidenced by a ministry to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through Good Shepherd Lutheran Homes (Hogares Luteranos el Buen Pastor), a group home for six young adults with IDD. This ministry serves as a beacon to the community as an example of Christian caregiving and has led to positive change within numerous government institutions.
